Swimming at Bize-Minervois [click to enlarge]The historic Languedoc village of Bize-Minervois is 2km away from La Petite Tuilerie. As well as a weekly market, the village has a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants. Built on the banks of the River Cesse, a shallow part of the river is accessible from the village and is used as a "swimming pool" during the warmer months. The swimming area is supervised by lifeguards during July and August.
Built in concentric circles around a medieval church, Bize-Minervois is a typical "circulade" village. Its picturesque streets, courtyards and gateways are a delight to explore all year round - and in February each year, the children of the village celebrate its history with a colourful carnival.Bize-Minervois : River Cesse [click to enlarge]
Bize-Minervois : vines [click to enlarge]Follow marked walks which take you through Bize-Minervois and up on to the dramatic limestone gorges. Look out for the ancient "Tour de Boussecos" or explore the prehistoric caves. Follow a trail up onto the rocky plateau called a "Pech". You will pass Roman lime kilns and cheese caves before reaching the top with its splendid panoramic view.
If you enjoy cycling, there are many interesting flat, hilly or mountainous cycle routes nearby. There are also several mountain bike trails. For a more leisurely family outing on bikes, however, we recommend the towpaths along the Canal-du-Midi.Cycling in the Minervois [click to enlarge]
Cycling in the Minervois [click to enlarge]The owners of La Petite Tuilerie regularly take part in local cycle races and are active members of "Vélo Sprint Narbonnais". They can give you plenty of information about excellent training routes in the area if you are a competitive cyclist (with or without a guide) and can help you to sign up for road races, mountain bike races, cyclo-cross or cyclo-sportive events during your stay.
For those guests who prefer more relaxing activities, we recommend a visit to "L’Oulibo", the olive-oil mill in Bize-Minervois, where you can watch how the area’s famous Lucques olives are turned into delicious olive oil. If you’re a fan of olives, you may also enjoy the "Fête de l’Olivier", which is celebrated in the village each year in mid-July.Olive trees [click to enlarge]

A little history...
Inhabited for at least 40,000 years, many Prehistoric relics and remains have been discovered in the area around Bize-Minervois. These include the bones of "L'Homme de Bize", which were found 2km away in a cave next to the River Douze.

During the Neolithic era, the nearby "Plateau du Cayla" was cultivated. The remains of a fortified "oppidum" can still be seen there today. The Roman settlers who subsequently arrived in the area, however, preferred to farm on the lower, more fertile ground, close to the River Cesse.

Bize-Minervois is a "circulade" - a village built in concentric circles - and at the centre is a medieval church. During the Wars of Religion, the Protestant Bizois (the inhabitants of Bize-Minervois) were protected from the Catholic Narbonnais by the village's ramparts, towers and moats.

"Les Bizois" are also known as "Les Mounstres" (monsters). On the last stroke of midnight each New Year's Eve, all the lights in the village are turned off, then a monster roams the streets to frighten the inhabitants with its noisy tail made of scrap metal and saucepans!

Things to see & do
